Doing some research on spiderless (GXP) XX1 style (narrow/wide) chainrings.

I see Wolf Tooth Components and Absolute Black both sell a version.

Anyone know of other vendors?

It is a fad. I have not dropped a chain with a plain teethed bling ring yet.

Brought to you by my fat fingers.

Are you running a clutch derailleur?

Yep. A clutch mech makes a huge difference.

Hmmm, I'll have to check on the pricing differences. I think the Wolf Tooth is ~ $80. If a tall-tooth spiderless ring is in the $50 range I may just go ahead and throw in the extra $30 for the XX1 style. If it's less, I'll probably take a chance on it.

Any favorite make/model?

Marpilli, I have had zero dropped chains with my wolftooth ring, but I bought an early prototype (snowflake) and he wont make anymore middleburn splined spiderless at the moment... I paid a lot more than $80 too. PITA because I run middleburns on all 4 bikes.

Worth paying for if you get to lose the ~$50 chainguide.

I do think the Wolf Tooth is the route I'll be taking. Looks like the 30t direct mount GXP will be available next week. Need to prime the PayPal account. ;)

Hmm, playing a bot around with a clutch derailleur and a track chain ring (higher and more square tooth profile), it seems that for chain rings, the alternating tooth width makes no difference, as it's the tooth profile and the clutch derailleur that keeps things in place.
The only place where I see a potential in alternating tooth width now, is in the pulley wheels in the derailleur.
There I can measure less chain deflection with the wider teeth, thus increasing precision.
