You don't have to tell us the before & after weight, but how much (approx) weight did you actually lose?

i fluctuated in the last 4 years, but anywhere from 20-35 lbs from the "before" pic. It wasnt all riding though, i eat differently too.

i didnt even realize i was in a clydesdale thread. i just searched for new posts.

to be honest, i was on meds for a while that i didnt know caused weight gain. i just assumed the sudden stubborn 15-20lbs i rapidly gained were a result of slowing metabolism (but i was only 18!). The meds were part of it, and i was able to go off of everything in favor of more natural supplements. As for the rest, some time in 2008 i had a horrible breakup that dragged on for months and i stopped eating. i think i was only taking in 700 calories a day, then mountain biking and hiking on top of that. so i lost 15lbs in one month. After that, i liked the new me, and i kept "not eating" (not healthy) and riding more and more. my goal was to maintain, but i lost another 15 lbs in the next few months. When i became happier agian, i got my appetite back and was eating around 1300 calories, and biking nearly every day. That calorie count was still pretty low for how active i was. sometimes i was eating even less. It was partly because i lived alone and i ate like a bird, lots of salads. When i live with a man, i find myself eating the crap he eats and thats a big weight gainer.

Anyway, throughout the next few years, aside from riding, i also started reading food labels and was astonished how much worse certain food items were than i thought. I also started reading online menus for the resturants i frequented, and started choosing the items with less calories. I didnt consider fat, or sodium or any of that. i focused on total calories, because in the end, thats what really matters. Obviously choosing protein over carbs will naturally burn you more calories throughout the day.

since i'm happier again, and living with a guy, i've packed on a few lbs. i'm just trying to enjoy life in moderation, and while i was enjoying being 105lbs at one time, it wasnt worth being depressed and starving.

The secret is to NEVER offer info to your better half how to eat to lose weight. Just lose a bunch of weight yourself by eating and exercising. Demand certain types of healthy foods for your dinner - she doesn't have to eat it.

so these days, i try to keep 1400-1500 total calories. that's low for some people, but i gain very easily. i'm not exactly Ms. Metabolism here. If i know i'm going to a party or out to eat, i can expect the count will go over that, but luckily when the weather warms up, my riding should put a dent in that.

another tip...i see a lot of people eating "carbs on carbs". for instance, if you're eating a meal with rice, you dont need bread too. just stick with one starch. you wont need the other. Or, if eating stirfry (or anything with meat and veggies) just change the ratio of the meat and veggies so that the veggies make up the bulk, and there will be overall less calories. Exchanging food rather than eliminating them will make you less hungry. Starving doesnt work long term, so its more about substituting bulk than reducing the amount of food you take in.

THIS! there are guys who are content to age, go bald, get fat, get sloppy, etc, but still expect a trophy wife. you both have to do it, not just expect it from the lady. BTW Sti, i'm not accusing you of doing that at all :) it's just something i've seen. It has to be a team effort. THere is nothing worse than trying to eat well, and your partner sits down next to you with a greasy pizza while you're stuck eating salad. it's like waving a drink in front of an alcoholic. not fair!

Yeah, my situation is like that only in reverse - I can survive on plain beans, red meat and whey protein for years, while she would not have an ounce of that. The 30-ish pounds I lost in the past tow years she gained.

You can't do anything to inspire her. As a matter of fact, the very fact that she knows that you want for her to lose weight may be encouraging her to gain. It's a passive aggressive thing, and a depression-ish spiral.
Oh, I'm fat.
That makes me sad.
Eating makes me feel better.
Munch munch munch.
Repeat until you decide to stop.

Do you watch Biggest Loser? A few things I noticed from that show. 1- everyone can lose weight when they decide to. 2- you have to lose weight for yourself. not for your husband or your kids or to make your parents proud. you have to want it for yourself. 3- you need to figure out WHY, emotionally and psychologically, you eat so much.

A few observations from life.

Cool vid, joe-it-all.

These are basically my first Hesitation Point self shots from Brown County Indiana for each of the last few years. It kinda shows my weight loss.

These pictures probably range about the last 75lbs in weight loss. I am around 225 today, started at 363.

Okay so we are on day 230 of this goal to drop weight. When I first got a scale I was around 300. Before that it was more. As of today and today's poop I'm right at 170.5 that's this afternoon as I should weigh less in the morning. Goes to show what one can accomplish if they put their mind to accomplishing a goal. Your body will follow in suit. PS, we ain't done yet either.
