Nice wildlife sighting DJ. Damn, I was hoping the big surprise was going to be Pamela Anderson prancing into view. But I'll take elk!

Those bighorns reminded me of a mountain goat attack that occurred in Olympic National Park a few years ago. Pretty freaky.

Wow, my sister and her hubby were riding the paved pathway up near Dillon Co. a couple of years ago. They got seperated as he moved out ahead. She had a Mountain Goat come barreling off the mountainside at full speed and it crossed narrowly missing her about 10' in front of her. I'm pretty sure that it was an intentional intimidating charge to scare the intruder [my sister] away from a new born. She said she caught a glimpse of white from the side and grabbed her brakes. The timing was such that if she didn't there would have been full impact. She stopped and the goat ran up the other side of the mountain. The goat stopped on a cliff and stared her down as my sister snapped a quick photo [I'll get that from her later] and feeling very unsafe and got the hell out of there.

Back to my encounter yesterday. I'm rarely concerned of elk charging. But yesterday they totally took me by surprise and very close. When I saw them staring me down and the one shook his head of antlers from side to side I took that as a warning of aggression and I turned and left.

Believe it or not this is a dead, bloated whale near Australia. Evidently not long after this pic was taken sharks took a few bites out of the "balloon", deflating it.

^ Grody ;)

Yesterday I encountered a herd of 14 Rocky Mountain Bighorn. 11 of which were Rams. 2 of which were full curl and several 3/4 curl. I managed to hike within 40' of the main herd and 30' of the 2 loners.

In the video the 2 full curl senior Rams were closest to the tree on the left side of the screen. One of them blocking the other from view.

They knew I was there and were watching. Once I pushed my luck and stepped another step closer they stood up. Then the two big ones put their heads down and hoofed the ground with a front leg. An obvious warning for me to turn and be on my way. You can see evidence of this in the last photo. My cell phone ran out of storage space to take anymore vids. so I just snapped photos.

Whoa DJ that's pretty cool! So were you feeling a little nervous getting that close? I suppose they're not in the rut or anything so maybe they were as docile as a bunch of rams could be but still. Nice pics.

Yes, definitely nervous. After they got startled and stood up. The two biggest Rams put their heads down and hoofed the ground with one leg, you can see it in the last two photos. A sequence of it. I took that as I best leave them to their peace and quiet. I turned and went down the mountainside.

Yeah, I think that was the prudent move. That's a pretty clear indication, there's no mistaking their feelings on this!

DJ, it is so awesome to be that close to wildlife. I have a pair of brown Carhardt pants that I live in, and I was bent over looking for a survey pin on my property. I hear this rustling behind me so I turned around and there were 2 little fauns about a foot away from my butt. I can't believe they didn't see or smell me. We both froze for a second and they scampered off.

LOL
That's cute awesome. I almost ran over two does yesterday. They crossed right in front of me, I came within 5' of hitting one of them.

Here's a shot I failed to post. The two biggest Rams turning tail after standing. They scooted 20' up the hill then turned with the rest of the herd and faced me. That's when the two big ones put their heads down and hoofed the ground with their front leg. I took that as a warning sign for me to leave them be.

Today's venture into the mountains was rewarding.

This guy was all dressed up in his formal velvet attire.

Scratching an itch. ;)

That's pretty darn cool DJ. I always count myself lucky if I happen to see animal behavior.

Three Bald Eagle sightings today. A mating pair were perched when an intruding male came in and dive bombed them. The male that was perched which was quite a bit larger than the perched female, took off after the intruder. I lost sight of them in the air. You can see in the video the dive bombing taking place. And in the photos the male taking flight after the intruder. Awesome thing to see.

Edit: Photos won't post.

I had quite a day of wildlife sightings. Two separate Bald Eagle sightings. Too far to photograph. Then I spotted 2 Black Bears lounging in a tree. My plan was to hike that trail. They just shut it down due to these Bears. I managed a couple of distant shots. The ranger wouldn't let me get any closer. Below the two bears in the tree were 2 bull elk laying in the meadow.

Then on the drive back I spotted a mother Black Bear and two cubs. I got pretty close. I think a bit too close. The momma came down to the rivers edge. I backed away.
