Pearl Izumi X-Alp Seek 3 MTB Shoes
Needing a 2nd set of MTB shoes, I picked up a pair of Pearl Izumi X-Alp Seek shoes from REI. I prefer a hybrid hiking/cycling shoes so that I can hike the bike up steep trails if need be.
The sole is stiff and gives more than ample support for pedaling while flexible enough to hike comfortably. The lugged sole provides good grip on loose gravel and hard packed trails while resisting picking up small pebbles or mud. Two slots whith a steel backing plates provide secure mounting points for SPD-compatible cleats while offering a good amount of adjustability in order to get that sweet spot dialed in.
The cleats are mounted slightly recessed within the sole so walking on flat concrete/tiled surfaces does not turn into a sliding situation. At the same time, pedal engagement is easy and quick.
The X-Alp Seek is a fully lace-up shoe but it performs well during pedaling (which was a surprise). The forefoot is held securely and there is just enough movement for comfort.
